King Diamond - Give Me Your Soul...Please
There are things you can rely on in life. Like knowing that the Dutch national football team will never win the World Championships. Other things you can rely on are on King Diamond albums. Always delivering quality and it is always a concept album. Give Me Your Soul…Please, is no different. I could stop here and just give the score, but you can rely on me that I actually will listen to the record instead of writing down a standard story.
The album starts off with the trademark-spoken intro, complete with eerie sounding organ. It sets the right mood for the story of this album. Creepy as always, this time it is about two young kids, a brother and sister, who find out that they just died. As the songs progress the listener learns bit by bit what happened to them. Fans of happy endings will be disappointed, because it turns out that their father went mad and killed the both of them. And it even gets worse as the children face judgment in afterlife and the boy has to go to hell. To rescue him the girl has to find an innocent soul. And guess who’s coming to dinner.
No, I’m not reviewing a movie. I know it has been a dream for King Diamond to see his creations come to live on celluloid. This time the story is slightly better than on his previous albums. The music has always been of good quality, and this one is no different. Enriched with yet again superb guitar playing by Andy LaRocque, it is the unmistakably vocals of Diamond himself that give this music its unique sound. I must say that this album is one of his better ones. Right in the line of albums like Abigail and Them. The vicious sounding ‘The Floating Head’, being a personal favorite of mine, proves that old fashion metal still is something you can rely on.
